Silicone oil typically refers to linear polydimethylsiloxane products that remain in a liquid state at room temperature. Generally divided into two types: methyl silicone oil and modified silicone oil.

Methyl silicone oil is the most commonly used silicone oil, also known as ordinary silicone oil. Its organic groups are all methyl, and methyl silicone oil has good chemical stability, insulation, and hydrophobicity. It is synthesized by hydrolysis of dimethyl dichlorosilane with water to form a primary condensed ring. Low ring compounds are obtained by cracking and distillation of the ring, and then various mixtures with different degrees of polymerization can be obtained by blending the ring, capping agent, and catalyst together. Silicone oil can be obtained by removing low boiling point compounds through vacuum distillation.

Silicone oil is generally a colorless (or pale yellow), odorless, non-toxic, and non-volatile liquid. Silicone oil is insoluble in water, methanol, diols, and ethoxyethanol. It is miscible with benzene, dimethyl ether, methyl ethyl ketone, carbon tetrachloride, or kerosene, and slightly soluble in acetone, dioxane, ethanol, and butanol. It has a very low vapor pressure, high flash point and ignition point, and low freezing point. As the number of segments n varies, the molecular weight increases and the viscosity also increases. This silicone oil can have various viscosities, ranging from 0.65 to over a million centimeters. If low viscosity silicone oil is to be produced, acidic clay can be used as a catalyst and adjusted at a temperature of 180 ℃, or sulfuric acid can be used as a catalyst and adjusted at a low temperature to produce high viscosity silicone oil or viscous substances using alkaline catalysts.

Silicone oil has excellent heat resistance, electrical insulation, weather resistance, hydrophobicity, physiological inertness, and low surface tension. In addition, it has a low viscosity temperature coefficient, high compression resistance, and some varieties also have radiation resistance.
